Ugh!! Wouldn't start in the middle of the lake
« on: August 31, 2010, 02:46:39 PM »
Seemed like the battery went dead. Had it tested today and tested good.
Pulled the solenoid and put power to it. It kicked in.
Taking the starter, battery and solenoid down to have them all tested at another place.

Really thought it was the battery!!!    ???

Sure it wasn't a bad electrical connection, either to the bat or the ign switch?

Starter tested bad at AutoZone. They swapped it out for me, gotta love those lifetime warranties!!! I'll get it back in tomorrow and try it out.

I know what you mean on the battery test. Took my wifes in and they said it just needed a charge. Left it there for two hours and went back, "it's bad" DUH... I told you that!!

It was the starter. Fired right up...
Should I be using a marine type starter? This is just a regular ole' starter that I have in there..

not needed as the motor is not enclosed-car starters are cheaper and work fine-plus with the water leak you had  might have gotten it wet=

Up to you David, the starter in my boat is original, I am guessing. I have had the boat about 5 or 6 years, and never had to replace it. It is not a marine starter. The only marine thing for the most part on my boat is the alternator. Just my .02

Ditto, I've ran many of a Schucks starter in out boats with zero problems (open engine compartment).  The only problem is when I got some salt water on one.   You should be good to go.
